M S Lavanya and M S Subbalakshmi are quite different from other young musicians you meet. What sets these women apart is the fact that they play the saxophone. They are the only women duo to play this western instrument in India. "Storming a male Bastion - Saxophone playing in India is no longer the preserve of men, thanks to the likes of M. S. Lavanya and M. S. Subbalakshmi. Saxophone is a difficult instrument even for men. These sisters were amazing - The Hindu".
Daughters of Girija Sainath and Mridangam artiste M. R. Sainath, music is in their blood. The sisters began their musical journey from the age of six. At the age of 15, the sisters began to learn saxophone under Padmashree Dr. Kadri Gopalnath. The sisters specialise in 'duet saxophone' with Lavanya playing the lead and her sister Subbalakshmi supporting her on a lower octave. Lavanya and Subbalakshmi's musical repertoire range from Carnatic music, Hindustani, Western to Jazz. They have won several awards for nearly a decade now and are currently riding high with their splendid performance in the show 'India's got Talent'. The sax sisters have given over 500 performances until now both on national and international grounds.
