Celebrate Yellu - Bella, Lohri, Sanskranthi, Bhogi, Pongal, Shiba Ratri on Jan 13 & 14 - Wishing all a happy festive

Yellu-Bella or Shiba Ratri or Pongal or Makar Sankaranthi call it any way it is the festival which celebrate all over with the same enthusiasm. In India, being a country of different religion has got fetival celebrate in different way in different states. The year 2010 has been declared got Kumbh Mela organized in Haridwar with Makar Sanskranthi on January 14th.

Let see what it is called in each state - with different name :though the festival is celebrates with a little of change

Makar Sanskranthi (మకర సంస్క్రాంతి )- Andhra Pradesh
Pongal (பொங்கல் )- Tamil Nadu
Makar Meka - Orissa
Lohri (ਲੋਹਰੀ )- North India, Punjab, Delhi, Harayana
Sankranthi - Central India
Ganga Sagar Mela or Shiba Ratri - Bengal
Bhogali Bihu - Assam.
Sabarimala - a end to Pilgrimage on this auspicious day - Makaravilakku - Keralal
Uttarayan - Gujarat and Rajastha
Magh Mela - Allahabad

About the Festival:

Though the name is different, the meaning is same of the festival, Sankranthi marks the begining of the spring season. This is very auspicious day when Lord sun moves to the Zodiac Sign Capricorn or Makara Rasi. Lord Sun is worshipped on this day with taking dip in the holy rivers and marking the start of new spring season.

Different state celebrate the festival in different, this festival is celebrate very grandly in South India states. In Andhra Pradesh & Tamil nadu it called as Makara Sanskranthi or Pongal or Bhogi.

Celebration in Karnataka

Yellu - Bella (ಎಳ್ಳು ಬೆಲ್ಲ) in Karnataka which means Til or Sessame and Jaggery. A mixture of these is prepared and distributed to friends, relatives and others marking the beginning of spring season normally given to women. While distributing the sweet, they say "Yellu bella thindu olle maathadi" (ಎಳ್ಳು ಬೆಲ್ಲ ತಿಂದು ಒಳ್ಳೆ ಮಾತಾಡಿ ) which means 'Speak sweet and after eating the Mixture'. Cattle are decorated in colours and taken to each residence.

Celebration in Andhra Pradesh:

With Bhogi Mantalu done in Andhra Pradesh, colorful kites flying all around the cities, rangoli designs. ThenGobbemma, Gangireddu(Bull) and haridasu(old traditional who come to every residence with decorated bulls) are the main aspects of Sankranthi festival. Kanuma, third day during Sankranti festival, is associated with the legend of lifting of Govardhan Giri by Lord krishna. Mukkanuma, the final day of Sankranti festival, is celebrated to worship cattle

In North India : Lohri Fesitval

The festival Lohri is celebrated very grandly in North Indian marking the begininng of Harvest seaason with music folk songs, dance all night and wishing a happy properous new year. This year Lohri, is celebrated every year on 13th of January.

Makara Sankranti is not only the festival to offer prayers to Lord Sun, it is also a festival to pay respect and pray for the Goddess of Knowledge (Saraswathi Devi or Saraswathi Maa). People visit Bodhan in Andhra Pradesh during this auspicious day.
